The thing that I love best about this picture of you is that I didn’t take it.
Your other mummy took this picture.
I love it for two reasons. One: Pictures of you during the day when I’m at work give me a little glimpse into your lives, it means a lot given how much of it I miss as a working mother. Two: Your mummy hates photography. Hates it. She took this picture not because she enjoyed arranging the scene and playing with the settings and shooting the session, but because she loves me and wanted to surprise me with something that would make me smile.
We’re that sort of family, and that makes me so happy. We’re the sort of family that snaps a picture because somebody would love to see, or hunts out avocados in the supermarket because you really should try them, or texts in the middle of the day just to say I love you.
I read somewhere that the first year with a baby is supposed to be the most trying for a relationship. Well, we’re six months in to having two of you and you haven’t broken us (yet). We’re still happy, still in love, and watching each other be mummy just delights us. Sharing you with each other is perfection.
I’m so excited for the future with your mummy, just like I always have been.
